About Corey

I'm passionate about tooling that pushes DX (Developer Experience) to new heights. DX is a common theme in my open source contributions. It is also a fundamental principle of my "people-based" philosophy of modern workplace excellence. I aim to make developer lives better while doing my part to advance technology. Over many years pursuing better DX, I've created hundreds of libraries, gists, utilities, and content.

Community

When you sponsor me, you're not just sponsoring a coder. I'm a community builder too.

I've been an individual member of the Node/OpenJS Foundation since 2016, as well as an original/still active member of the Node Version Management group. I'm also a part of the WinterCG group.

My work on Github has reached millions, but I also answer questions from the global community on Quora. I became a Top Writer in 2018 - Corey Butler on Quora profile.

Brian Moeskau (cofounded ExtJS/Sencha) and I cofounded Bleeding Edge Web, a 4K+ member developer-oriented meetup in Austin, TX in the early 2010's. Each month we review the state of the web and bring in speakers from around the world to help keep Austin on the edge of technology.

I've also volunteered my time to help direct tech and tech-related publications. Titles include Mike Riley's Developing Android on Android (Pragmatic), Mike West's People Analytics for Dummies (Wiley), and the Irish Times amongst many.

Why Sponsor?

I've done all of this on my own time/dime. I have ideas to elevate these projects & communities well beyond where they are today, but there are costs associated and my time is limited.

Honesty/Transparency in Sponsorship:

If you've read this far, you are already familiar with the typical song and dance: more money means more time to focus. While that is true, my "stretch goals" are to hire help.

I make my living running a boutique tech consulting practice. It consumes a lot of time, but pays the bills and employs a few exceptional engineers. In the past, I have hired new developers on a contract basis, reinvesting margins/proceeds by putting them to work on my open source projects. I've also had to let promising new engineers go because client projects ended, with no new engagements for less-experienced talent. This is a common industry problem and often demoralizing situation for these talented developers who otherwise flourish. I would prefer to continue mentoring eager people like this, giving the next generation of developers a chance to work on projects that matter without worrying where their meals come from.

When you sponsor me, you're not just sponsoring some guy. You're investing in the community we live in, work in, and continue to foster. I'm merely a steward.

Thank you for your support.

@coreybutler

I'd love to cover costs of some of the tooling and services I use to make and maintain projects. I'd particularly like to cover the cost of some VM's, CloudFlare Workers/KV, cloud services, and code signing certificates. Meeting these goals would help increase productivity (builds, testing, etc), and it may even cover some basic services (ex: I'd really love to make NVM4W self-updating).
